The twelve life areas

Astrology Houses

Astrology houses divide a birth chart into twelve sectors anchored to the local horizon and meridian at a specific birth time and place. In a practical reading, a planet describes a function, its zodiac sign describes how that function is expressed, and its house adds the life area where the theme is emphasized. Houses are therefore a time-sensitive layer of the chart, not a second set of zodiac signs.

Quick reference

The twelve houses at a glance

Use these as broad reading fields, then return to the actual planets, cusp signs, rulers and aspects in the calculated chart. Individual house pages are intentionally postponed until post-launch evidence justifies them.

01

Houses are not zodiac signs

Both systems use a twelve-part circle, but they do different jobs. A sign describes the style in which a planet functions; a house describes the chart sector or life field in which that function is emphasized. Treating the 1st house as “Aries,” the 2nd as “Taurus,” and so on can blur the actual cusp signs and rulers in an individual chart.

02

Exact birth time and birthplace orient the house wheel

House cusps depend on the local horizon and meridian. The recorded civil time must first be resolved through the correct historical timezone, then combined with latitude and longitude. That is why a birthday by itself cannot support exact houses, the Ascendant or the Midheaven.

03

House systems can place cusps differently

Astrologers use more than one house system. AstroZora launches with Placidus as the default and Whole Sign as a secondary option. The selected system is part of the calculation metadata so a house placement is not presented as if it were independent of that methodological choice.

04

Read a house in layers: cusp, planets, ruler and aspects

A useful first pass is to identify the sign on the house cusp, note any planets actually placed in the house, then locate the planet that rules the cusp sign and inspect its placement and major aspects. This keeps the interpretation tied to the calculated chart rather than a generic house keyword.

05

An empty house is still part of the chart

A house with no natal planets is not a missing life area. The house still has a cusp, a sign and a ruler within the chosen system. Instead of forcing a meaning from “empty,” read the cusp sign, its ruler and the wider chart context.

06

Angles and houses are related but not interchangeable

The Ascendant and Midheaven are precise chart angles. They help orient the house structure, but an angle is not merely another name for a whole house. AstroZora reports ASC and MC separately from the twelve house cusps so the geometry remains visible.

07

Polar latitudes require transparent handling

Some quadrant systems cannot be calculated normally at extreme latitudes. If the underlying engine cannot return Placidus and uses a documented fallback, AstroZora must report the house system actually calculated rather than silently presenting the result as Placidus.

Worked method

Read a planet-in-house placement as one layer, not the whole story

Suppose a calculated chart places Venus in Taurus in the 7th house. Venus is the function being interpreted, Taurus describes its zodiac style, and the 7th house adds the partnership field. The next step is to inspect the 7th-house cusp, its ruler and Venus’s major aspects before summarizing a relationship theme. That sequence is more useful than treating “Venus in the 7th” as a complete verdict.

Use the concept in your chart

Move from explanation to your own result.

The fastest way to make this useful is to see the relevant placement or relationship in a calculated chart rather than reading generic descriptions in isolation.
