Ascendant calculator

Rising Sign Calculator

Find your Rising sign, also called your Ascendant, from your birth date, exact local birth time and birthplace. The Ascendant is the zodiac degree on the eastern horizon at birth, so it cannot be recovered responsibly from a birthday alone. AstroZora uses the same validated natal calculation as the full chart and does not insert a guessed default time.

Quick answer

What does a Rising sign calculator calculate?

A Rising sign calculator finds the exact zodiac degree crossing the eastern horizon for a specific birth moment and place. The sign containing that degree is your Rising sign, or Ascendant sign. Because the local horizon changes continuously as Earth rotates, accurate time and location are essential inputs rather than optional personalization details.

What you need

Your Ascendant needs all three birth details

Unlike a Sun sign lookup, the Ascendant is anchored to the local horizon. Date, time and place each change the calculation context.

01

Birth date

Sets the astronomical date used to establish the sky and sidereal-time context.

02

Exact birth time

Locates the eastern horizon at the recorded birth moment. A guessed time can change the degree or sign.

03

Birthplace

Provides latitude, longitude and the historical timezone needed to resolve the recorded local time.

How it works

Why an exact birth time matters for your Rising sign

The Ascendant is a precise degree, not only a sign label. Time and location orient the zodiac against the eastern horizon, while historical timezone rules determine which UTC moment the recorded civil time represents. Near a sign boundary, even modest time uncertainty can change the Rising sign itself.

Accuracy & uncertainty

AstroZora shows what the data supports.

01

Birth time

Time-sensitive angles and houses are never presented as exact when the birth time is unknown.

02

Historical time

Birthplace data is resolved to an IANA timezone so historical offsets and daylight-saving transitions can be handled explicitly.

03

Calculation metadata

Results are designed to expose zodiac, house-system, ephemeris and timezone-version details for reproducibility.

Reading example

Read the sign, degree and ruler as different pieces

If a calculated Ascendant falls at 18 degrees of Libra, “Libra Rising” names the sign containing the Ascendant, while 18 degrees is the precise position. Venus is then identified as the traditional ruler of Libra. Those are related facts, but they are not interchangeable and the full chart still adds houses, planets and aspects.

Common questions

Rising sign calculator questions

Visible answers for users; no FAQ rich-result markup is added.

Is Rising sign the same as Ascendant?

Yes. The Ascendant is the exact zodiac degree on the eastern horizon, while “Rising sign” names the zodiac sign that contains that degree.

Can I find my Rising sign without a birth time?

Not reliably. The Ascendant is time-sensitive, so AstroZora does not choose one from the birth date alone or insert a guessed default time.

Why does birthplace matter for the Ascendant?

The eastern horizon depends on where the birth occurred. Latitude and longitude change the local orientation of the zodiac, and the place also determines the historical timezone used for the recorded civil time.

What is a chart ruler?

The chart ruler is the planet associated with the Rising sign by the selected rulership convention. AstroZora shows it as contextual information, not as a replacement for interpreting the rest of the chart.
