Astrology Aspects

Astrology aspects are measured angular relationships between planets or chart points. They add a relational layer to the birth chart: planets describe functions, signs describe style, houses add context, and aspects show how two chart factors are geometrically connected. AstroZora V1 focuses on five major aspects and publishes the exact angles and orb limits used by the calculator instead of hiding them behind a generic interpretation.

These are methodology choices for the launch calculator. Different astrology traditions and software may use different orb thresholds, so the values are exposed rather than treated as universal constants.

AspectExact angleAstroZora V1 treatment
Conjunction0°8° orb · two chart functions occupy roughly the same zodiac direction.
Sextile60°5° orb · traditionally read as a cooperative or opportunity-oriented relationship.
Square90°7° orb · traditionally read as a friction, adjustment or action-producing relationship.
Trine120°7° orb · traditionally read as a comparatively flowing or reinforcing relationship.
Opposition180°8° orb · traditionally read as a polarity that brings two functions into direct relationship.
01

An aspect begins with angular distance

The calculator compares two longitudes around the zodiac circle and measures their smallest angular separation. If that distance falls close enough to one of the configured major angles, the relationship is classified as an aspect and its orb records how far it is from exact.

02

Orb tells you how close the aspect is to exact

An exact trine is 120 degrees. A separation of 122 degrees is a trine with a 2-degree orb under AstroZora V1. The same principle applies to the other major aspects. Tighter orbs are one factor in deciding which contacts deserve prominence in the key-aspect summary.

03

Aspect names do not erase the planets involved

A Moon–Saturn square and a Mercury–Mars square share the same 90-degree geometry but connect different chart functions. The aspect describes the relationship; the participating planets, their signs, houses and wider chart context determine what is actually being interpreted.

04

“Soft” and “hard” are shorthand, not verdicts

Traditional astrology often groups trines and sextiles as easier-flowing aspects and squares and oppositions as more tension-oriented. AstroZora treats those labels as interpretive shorthand, not guarantees of positive or negative outcomes. A conjunction is especially dependent on which two factors are joined.

05

Key-aspect ranking is selective by design

A chart can contain many valid contacts. AstroZora surfaces a smaller key set first using orb tightness plus relevance to the Sun, Moon, personal planets and chart angles, while keeping the fuller aspect list available below. This prevents the result from becoming an undifferentiated wall of aspect names.

06

Natal aspects and synastry aspects use the same geometry in different contexts

A natal aspect connects two factors inside one birth chart. A synastry aspect compares one person’s chart with another person’s chart. The angular calculation is related, but the interpretive question changes from an internal chart relationship to an inter-chart relationship.

07

Interpret the aspect after signs and houses are known

A practical reading order is: identify both planets, confirm the aspect and orb, note each planet’s sign and house when reliable, then ask whether the same planets or themes repeat elsewhere. This keeps a single aspect from overpowering the structure of the chart.

Worked method

A 2-degree orb shows the calculation before the interpretation

In this hypothetical example, 14 degrees Taurus corresponds to 44 degrees of zodiac longitude and 16 degrees Virgo to 166 degrees. The smallest separation is 122 degrees, which is 2 degrees away from an exact 120-degree trine. AstroZora would first record that geometry and orb, then interpret the Moon–Venus relationship in the context of both signs, houses and the rest of the chart.

The fastest way to make this useful is to see the relevant placement or relationship in a calculated chart rather than reading generic descriptions in isolation.
